, (Dutch) provides management and consultancy services to (water) utility companies and authorities in emerging Europe, Central Asia and the Middle East. Utility companies, consulting firms and donor agencies like to work with Giel because of his open mind, analytical skills and direct approach.
Over the last ten years he has worked on water sector reform, company and sector restructuring, implementation of performance monitoring systems and Key Performance Indicators (KPIs), strategic, business and investment planning, staff optimisation, finance, accounting, billing, collection and Management Information Systems.
While on mission he is always busy implement adequate systems and tools in dynamic environments (post conflict, transition, under restructuring, NewCo). “The challenge is to get started on the implementation, to create ownership along the way, show possibilities and increase appetite for further developments.”
Working with companies on site on practical challenges such as revenue collections and costs reductions provides vital input for more policy oriented work such as for instance the development of a management strategy for the three regional water utilities in SW Kosovo.
At home in the Netherlands Giel raises four young daughters together with his wife Christy. With Christy he has established TreeVelop Projects and Processes and more recently TreeVelop People and Planet, of which he is the Treasurer. He also chairs the Board of Trustees of the local Waldorf School for primary education. At home Giel keeps his knowledge up to date through studies and providing lectures on water sector reform and benchmarking. Giel holds Master degrees in Economics from the University of Amsterdam and the Central European University in Hungary.
Before moving into consulting he has worked as a portfolio manager investing in the capital markets of Central and Eastern Europe for three years. Macro-economic reform in transition economies remains one of his interests.
Giel is a generalist and a team player, who can work on company restructuring as well as policy making, human resources as well as finances in every sector where this is relevant and needed.
Giel likes to be the oxygen that processes need to take flame again. His management style and approach has been widely considered successful, due to his ability to recruit, train and motivate (local) staff and a hands-on, informal working style, combined with high professional standards.
Giel is fluent in English, German and Dutch, while having a fair command of Hungarian and French.
